Like all Westphal College programs, the Computer Science programs provide a hands-on curriculum combined with valuable co-op experiences.
What is a video game designer?
To graduate, students in this BA program will complete an internship, professional portfolio, and Senior Capstone. Graduates are prepared to pursue positions in the areas such as Global Games, Digital Culture Studies, Finance, Game and Media Journalism, Digital Humanities, Entrepreneurship, Law, and New Media Policy. Examples include Digital Game Design; Computer Game Platform Analysis; History of Computer Game Design; Online and Mobile Gaming; Psychology of Sport; Three-Dimensional Game Art; and Sport, Culture, and Society. Students in both minor programs have access to the same facilities, labs, and resources provided through the GMU CVPA.
Michigan State University
The Virtual Reality Development BFA at Ringling College of Art and Design provides the same access and benefits as the Game Art BFA. This 120-credit hour program focuses on the design, creation, and analyzing of immersive experiences. This includes utilizing game engine technology in the creation of immersive experiences; navigating the production pipeline for 3D VR; utilizing specific software for creating 3D databases; mastering story structures; and innovating VR ideas. Core courses across both areas include eSports Industries, Gamification in Society, Ethics in a Digital World, and Monetizing Independent Gaming. Graduates of the Games Programs at Miami University have continued on to graduate study or careers in Game Art, Game Design and Development, Writing for Games, Multimedia Design, AR/VR, 3D Modeling, and UI/UX, among others. The College of Engineering and the College of Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University (OSU) provide several pathways to study games.

DigiPen Institute of Technology’s Department of Game Software Design and Production offers BS degrees in Computer Science and Game Design and Computer Science in Real-Time Interactive Simulation (BS in RTIS). Examples include Virtual Reality; eSports Industries; Digital Storytelling and Culture; Narrative Practices in Digital Games; Advanced Game Development; and Gamification in Society. Halfway through the LSU MS DMAE program, students will complete a Digital Media Internship. During the final two semesters, students will work in teams to complete a final project.

UCF also offers an MA in Digital Media - Visual Language and Interactive Media through the Nicholson School of Communication & Media. Students in this program may pursue a non-thesis option and portfolios might include works of art, software or games. Students will graduate from the GSAS Programs at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a professional portfolio of their best works. Located in Hollywood, California, Gnomon School of Visual Effects sits on a 35,000 square foot lot within the historic Television Center Studio lot. Established in 1997, Gnomon offers degree and vocational certificate programs, as well as over 100 individual 10-week courses. Gnomon School of Visual Effects is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC).

The school serves more than 30,000 students enrolled in nearly 150 degree programs across seven schools. Graduates of the games-related programs at The Ohio State University are prepared to pursue careers in fields such as entertainment, technology, art, and engineering. The specialization explores art games, moving images, 3D modeling and animation, sound, emerging forms, and more. In the UW Reality Lab, designers have opportunities to work on research projects in a variety of areas.
Course examples across pathways include Creating Mobile Games, 3D Animation Techniques, Game Content Creation, Game Systems Development, Game Design and Production, Digital Storytelling, Game Development, and Interaction & Usability. Once core requirements are complete, students may advance to the Game Development Concentration, which consists of 21 credit hours of games-focused courses and electives. Examples include Foundations of Interactive Game Design, Computer Graphics, Game Engine Foundations, Computational Visual Narrative, Building Game AI, Game Studies, Special Topics in Film Styles and Genres, Computer Models of Interactive Narrative, and Fantasy. The School of Arts and Sciences at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) is home to the Interactive Media & Game Development (IMGD) Program.
The Games and Interactive Media Cluster consists of more than 20 game design course options. Graduates of the Game Design Programs at Drexel University are prepared to pursue positions in pc, mobile and console game design, game art, simulation, education, training, and more. Beyond that, it mostly depends on what aspects of design or development you want to focus on.
